Chaos Reborn Introduction:
Chaos Reborn, developed by Snapshot Games, is a turn-based tactical RPG that emerged from a successful Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign in April 2014. After an initial access release in December 2014, the full game officially launched in October 2015.
This game serves as a reimagining of Julian Gollop's 1985 creation, Chaos: The Battle of Wizards. The modern rendition boasts numerous enhancements over its predecessor, including a meta-game layer with role-playing elements. Players can now acquire equipment like armor, staves, and talismans, each offering unique enhancements such as additional spells and abilities.
Gameplay:
Chaos Reborn offers both online and offline modes for both single-player and multiplayer experiences, encompassing both player versus player and player versus environment scenarios. The gameplay revolves around turn-based manipulation of units on a battlefield with the goal of eliminating opponents' key unit, the wizard. Losing the wizard results in defeat, removing all units from the field. By casting spells, wizards can conjure new units, equip themselves with weapons, and directly attack other units.
The single-player campaign and Realm Quest mode construct a narrative world map, stringing together battles that culminate in confrontations against powerful wizard units, including a wizard king. This mode integrates strategic and role-playing elements, involving infrastructure capture, unit deployment, mercenary hires, and story-driven outcomes.
Matches involve controlling diverse creature units inspired by mythical beasts and supernatural entities. These units can be initially obtained through mercenaries or villagers, and additional units can be summoned via spells each turn. Many of these creatures possess distinctive abilities that differentiate them beyond numerical stats.
Final Words:
Snapshot Games introduced version 1.10 on July 25, 2016, which introduced Duel Mode and Forge Crystals. Duel Mode simplified battles against human or AI opponents, rewarding players with escalating Gold and Forge Crystals for unbroken victories, along with a daily Talisman. Forge Crystals could be spent in the Equipment Forge, enabling players to personalize their character's appearance and create custom gear.
Chaos Reborn garnered positive feedback, achieving an 85/100 score on Metacritic. PC Gamer awarded it 87%, hailing it as a revival of a classic tactical game. The game's excellence led to a nomination for the Best Indie Game category at the Golden Joystick Awards in 2015, although it lost to Kerbal Space Program.
